About VJ Lair

VJ Lair As a fine art photographer, I equally enjoy creating still life images and capturing artistic images of nature and architecture. Creating still life images offers me the opportunity to design an image from a blank canvas. I can be inspired by a single object and build a story from there. But, as much as I enjoy the challenge of the blank canvas in the studio, I also love shooting outdoors, capturing at just the right perspective, just the right time, a beautiful landscape--either created by people or by nature. I like the grand and the simple, coarse edges and soft folds. I shoot inside and outside; in color and black-and-white; in soft focus, sharp detail, or selective focus; I enjoy the creative use of available light and the strategic placement of manufactured lighting; in digital, HDR, and large format film.

I am both a photographer and a psychologist, and there is a rhythm to these two vocations that fit well together. As a psychologist, I meet clients at momentous occasions in their lives. My task is to spend time with them in that moment and discover the holistic picture of who they are--past, present, and potential. The process calls upon me to see the ebb and flow, pattern, and momentum of their lives, all captured in a fixed moment in time.

As a photographer, I see all the movement around me--the ebb and flow, pattern, and momentum, and I freeze and capture a singular moment in time... the shadow of a gas lamp in the French Quarter glimpsed through a darkened archway... an old ship seen through a gazebo in the harbor. Or perhaps I'll create a still life image, in which all the history and meaning behind each ordinary object is brought together to tell a story... the voyager's compass laying with roughhewn, wine-stained corks... dappled light falling across a bed roll, oil lantern, and hat--sepia traces of a cowboy's life. Thanks for checking out my images. I'm excited to share with you the world as I see it. V.J.
